DESCRIPTION:
This recording relives the performance of Art Farmer and his quintet captured live in May of 1976 at the New York West Village club called Boomers. The club is no longer there. The quintet performed at Boomers at 340 Bleecker Street, for four nights between May 12th and 15th in 1976. The last two nights were recorded yielding enough material for two albums. Art Farmer was 48 at the time.
During the days on May 12th and 13th, Art Farmer was recording his album The Summer Knows (also available from Test of Time Records). It so happens that the song, “Manha Do Carnival” from the movie Black Orpheus, is on both The Summer Knows and At Boomers Vol. 2. In the studio album, the song is performed in typical Farmer lyrical
fashion. In the live version, it is done in hard bop style. It is interesting to listen to and compare the performances. You get the best of both styles.
East Wind always intended to release At Boomers Vol. 2 as a follow-up to the first album. However, it was never released until 26 years after the session. Test of Time Records now presents this great music to the U.S. audience for the first time.
The core of the quintet is made up of Cedar Walton (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums) – the regular trio that Art Farmer frequently collaborated with on other East Wind titles. Clifford Jordan (tenor sax) rounded out the quintet. Art Farmer was a longtime friend of Clifford’s, having recorded with him since 1957.
The repertoire includes Cedar Walton’s “Fantasy in ‘D’” (featuring long solos by Farmer and Jordan), Sam Jones’ “Blues for Amos”, the aforementioned “Manha Do Carnival” and “What’s New.” Sit back and enjoy the energy and hard bop of Art Farmer backed up by excellent musicians.
