DESCRIPTION:
This is the last in the three-part chronicle of The Great Jazz Trio’s
landmark performance recorded live at The Village Vanguard between February
18th and 20th, 1977. This recording features the original Great Jazz Trio
dream team of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on
drums. During these 3-days, six full hours of flawless music by these top
musicians at their best was recorded. The idea for these jazz greats to team
up came from the youngest, Tony Williams. After playing together in two earlier
occasions, their chemistry was so good that they all decided to perform together
again at the urging of Max Gordon, the late owner of The Village Vanguard.
It was Max Gordon that christened the group, The Great Jazz Trio. Featured
in this volume are timeless classics such as Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated
Lady,” Oscar Hammerstein’s “Softly As in a Morning Sunrise”,
Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s “My Funny Valentine,”
Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave” and Randy Weston’s “Hi-Fly.”
